Practice Makes Better!

There is no meeting next Wednesday (Dec 28) - we will meet again as usual on Wed January 4th.

Chatter by the Charles is now in July 2011 and we continue to hold meetings each Wednesday at 12:30 here at MIT. In the past year, under the terrific presidency of Paul Scott, we attracted many new members, and thought of many new and useful ways to make our meetings more original and exciting. We thought of new ways to improve Table Topics. We invited guest speakers. We had more social events outside the club. We had more speech contests and fully supported our contestants as they progressed from one round to the next. Thanks to Paul for making the club the successful and fun-loving place that it is today.

Toastmasters is dedicated to improving people’s public speaking skills. You will find no better (and affordable) way to constantly exercise your public speaking. Toastmasters is not like a class which starts and ends after a short time. It is perpetual. That means you can constantly practice each week and keep going for ever. As the months pass, and provided you make the effort to participate at the meetings, Toastmasters will work its magic on you.

You will become a better public speaker. But Toastmasters offers so much more. You will become a better communicator. You will see your confidence increase in leaps and bounds. You will perform better at job interviews. You will network better. Toastmasters will help you feel more comfortable at conferences and large group networking events. There is no end to the benefits you will get from the club.

Most importantly, Chatter by the Charles is also a welcoming place to meet new people. You will find an interesting and diverse group of people here. We all share one goal in common - to become great communicators and give constructive feedback on each other’s speeches so that over time we just get better and better. For those of you who feel nervousness about speaking in public we provide mentoring to give you encouragement and help you move forward.

Come along and experience what our club has to offer. We are open to the public and you will always be welcome.

Bowling

We just had another social outing, heading off for drinks and fun at Sacco's Bowling in Davis Square. What a great place! The place adjoins a wood oven pizza restaurant and bar, giving us every opportunity to socialize, have fun, and even try out some bowling. The only problem is that our bowling skills are not as good as our public speaking skills!

Humor Contest September 2011

Once again we all got together to support Stephanie, Santiago, and Christine who were competing to get the most laughs at last week's Humor Contest.  The meeting was hosted by Ayguen and myself. Thanks especially to Ayguen for putting so much effort into making the contest such a success.

As always, the standard was very high and the judges (led by Britt) were hard pushed to make a final decision. However the first prize of a Coop gift card was awarded to Stephanie for her excellent speech entitled "Muscovian Adventures with Lefty and Mutey", a very entertaining 7 minutes about two Russian hand puppets celebrating the advances of Russian space technology. Much credit is also given to the first runner up, Christine, who walked away with the second prize (the latest electronic version of Boggle), for her hilarious speech about the trials and tribulations of being on vacation, and also Santiago for his interesting thoughts about the roles of men in the 21st century.

The meeting ended with everyone giving feedback on all three speeches. This is what makes Chatter by the Charles such a useful experience for its members. It is this feedback that helps all of our members evolve and mature as great public speakers and communicators.

We look forward to supporting Stephanie in the next Area level contest. It will be held on Wednesday Oct 5 at 6pm. It will be on MIT campus in building 3, room 133. Let's all show up and give Stephanie all the encouragement she needs to move on to the next round!

Farewell Drinks for Jeff

It is with much regret that we are saying farewell to Jeff, who has been a long standing member of the Club for many years.

We all got together at the Cambridge Brewing Company to wish him the very best. Jeff, his wife Mitzi, Ayguen, Jack, and myself were there.

We wish Jeff all the very best for his new career in Switzerland. We all hope there is a Toastmasters club in Basel!

The King's Speech - DVD Contest

Thanks to Adriana Baco of Allied Integrated Marketing who partnered with Chatter By The Charles for the King's Speech DVD Contest.

Our lucky winner was Jeff Day who is on the left along with myself - Paul J. Scott.

Just another event that keeps Chatter By The Charles unique and fresh!

INTERNATIONAL SPEECH CONTEST - 2011:

Thank you to all who made our International Speech Contest a huge success which was held on  March 23rd, 2011.

All speeches were packed with excellent material, graceful deliveries and polished messages.

As Ayguen moves on to the next level of competition, we will be supportive and wish her the best with her speech "Following your dreams no matter what".

Congratulations again to our group for making this contest exceptionally great!

See more photos from this event and our celebratory Karaoke night!

HUMOROUS SPEECH CONTEST 2010!

Chatter By The Charles Fall 2010 Humorous Speech ContestWOW! Another great Humorous Speech contest has happened here at Chatter By The Charles on September 22, 2010.  Thanks to a room filled with members, special guests, judges and contestants along with pizza from The Upper Crust Pizzeria, this year's contest was a smash!  It came down to Luke Farrer and Jeff Day as they battled it out for just who could acquire the appropriate number of laughs from the audience and after an extended private judges conference locked away next door - the results were in.  Luke Farrer had taken Runner-Up and walked away with not only 72 laughs, but also a Frank Sinatra DVD set as the official Chatter By The Charles 2010 Runner Up.  And the crowd ensued... Jeff Day is our 2010 first place winner here at Chatter By The Charles after taking the crowd through what some have called a ride along the verbal Massachusetts freeway quizzing each attendee along that humor filled ride on whether they worthy to be a Mass resident! (Jeff also walked away with a prize of a $25 Upper Crust Gift Card)

Thank you to everyone who made this contest possible by attending, cheering, showing support and offering feedback as well.  It's with that feedback that we grow as a speaker and person and something we take pride in here at Chatter By The Charles.
